Dr. Samir Kumar DAS is an independent researcher, and formerly a Professor of Political Science, University of Calcutta. Previously Vice-Chancellor of the University of North Bengal, and a Postdoctoral Fellow (2005) of Social Science Research Council (South Asia Program), he was presently the Coordinator of the University Grants Commission-Departmental Research Support (UGC-DRS) Programme (Phases II & III)) on ‘Democratic Governance’. He served as an Adjunct Professor of Government at Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Visiting Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and at Universite Sorbonne Paris Nord among many of his recent assignments. He specializes in and writes on issues of ethnicity, identity, security, migration, rights and justice. Some of his publications include India's Postcolonial Hinterlands (Routledge), The Making of Goddess Durga in Bengal: Art, Heritage and the Public (Springer), Migrations, Identities and Democratic Practices in India (Routledge), Governing India’s Northeast: Essays on Insurgency, Development and the Culture of Peace (Springer), India: Democracy and Violence (Oxford University Press), Conflict and Peace in India’s Northeast: The Role of Civil Society (East-West Center) among others.
