Professor Om Prakash Mishra has been a faculty of Jadavpur University since 1987 till his retirement in March 2026. He was the Head of the Department of International Relations in the University (1994-1996 and in 2018-2020), Founder Coordinator of Centre for Refugee Studies, first of its kind institution in India and Dean of the Faculty Council of Arts. He has served the National Security Advisory Board to Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Chaired the UGC Expert Committee on Universities and Public Policy, and was a Member, Board of Governors of MDI Gurgaon. He also served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and as Vice-Chancellor of University of North Bengal. He was also President, Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK). Together with Vice- Admiral P J Jacob and others, Prof. Mishra established Global India Foundation in 2006 and served as its Member Secretary till 2025.

Prof. Mishra has been a consultant to many reputed international research institutes and organisations, like the Global IDP Project of the Norwegian Refugee Council, UNHCR, and Brookings Institution etc. He is a regular commentator on current political and international affairs in print and electronic media in the country and abroad. He has been invited by many of the top teaching and research institutes and national and international NGOs and has been invited to countries including PRC, USA, Canada, UK, Switzerland, South Korea, Austria, Pakistan, Thailand, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Australia, Nepal, Uzbekistan, Russia, Krygyzistan, Tajikistan, Japan, Vietnam etc for various academic assignments. His first US was under the prestigious International Visitors Leadership Program of the Government of the United States of America and he was in UK on the invitation of University of Oxford.
