
Dr.
Amitabh Mattoo is currently a Professor of International Politics
at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University,
New Delhi. Professor Amitabh Mattoo, is one of India's leading thinkers
and writers on international relations. Professor Mattoo became
the youngest Vice Chancellor of the University of Jammu and served
from November 2002 to December 2008. He is currently a Member of
the National Knowledge Commission, a high-level advisory group to
the Prime Minister of India and concurrently Director of the Core
Group for the Study of National Security. Professor Mattoo is also
on the Governing Council of the Nuclear Science Centre; a member
of the Standing Committee of the Association of Indian Universities;
and on the Executive Council of several Universities. Professor
Mattoo was a member of National Security Advisory Board and also
a Member of the Task Force constituted by the Prime Minister of
India, Dr. Manmohan Singh on Global Strategic Developments. Recognizing
his contribution to education, The President of India honoured Professor
Mattoo on the occasion of the Republic Day (2008) with the 'Padma
Shri'. Professor Mattoo has been the recipient of several such national
and international awards.
Professor Mattoo was born in Srinagar on 26 June 1962. He had his
early education in Burn Hall School, Srinagar and the Jawaharlal
Nehru University, New Delhi. Professor Mattoo did his Doctorate
in International Relations from the University of Oxford, United
Kingdom. Professor Mattoo was selected for the Indian Police Service
in 1988 but preferred a career in academics.
Professor Mattoo has been visiting Professor at Stanford University,
USA, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Illinois
at Urbana Champaign. Professor Mattoo has been Chairperson of the
Centre for International Politics, Organization and Disarmament
at Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has lectured at all major universities
like Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge and Sorbonne.
Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, was also
appointed as a member of the task force constituted by Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh on Global Strategic Developments. The Task Force
was set up to examine various aspects of global trends in strategic
affairs and their implications for India.
